The R-Pass truck toll in Alsace is scheduled to start on 2027-01-01 and charges HGVs over 3.5 t between 7.1 and 34.5 centimes per km, depending on weight and Euro class. A Euro VI HGV over 32 t pays 14.6 centimes per km. A court challenge by hauliers is still pending.

When does the R-Pass truck toll start?

The operator's R-PASS information materials state that the tax applies from 2027-01-01. The Collectivité européenne d'Alsace (CEA) set the rules in its deliberation CD-2025-4-7-1 of 2025-10-20.

The date carries one risk. On 2025-12-22 the regional haulage federation FNTR Alsace filed a suspensive appeal against the scheme, joined by Medef Alsace and other business groups. As of 2026-10-23 we found no court ruling and no announced delay, so 2027-01-01 is the decided date, not a guaranteed one. Plan routes with the toll included and recheck the operator site in December.

How much does the R-Pass cost per km for an HGV?

The tariff adds an infrastructure part, a pollution part and a CO2 part, set by weight class and Euro class. The official tariff grid runs from 7.1 centimes per km for a Euro VII vehicle between 3.5 t and 12 t to 34.5 centimes per km for a Euro 0 vehicle over 32 t.

For a Euro VI HGV the total is 7.4 centimes per km from 3.5 t to 12 t, 8.8 from 12 t to 18 t, 11.5 from 18 t to 32 t and 14.6 above 32 t. A Euro VI tractor and trailer over 32 t therefore pays 14.60 EUR for every 100 km driven on the taxed network.

Frequent users get a 13 percent discount, but only on the infrastructure part of the rate. It applies to HGVs registered with an EETS provider that make more than 20 trips a month, where a trip is one entry followed by one exit on the taxed network. For a Euro VI vehicle over 32 t the infrastructure part is 10.1 centimes, so the pollution and CO2 parts are not reduced.

Which roads and vehicles does the R-Pass cover?

The taxed network is the A35 and A36 on their non-concession sections outside the Strasbourg Eurometropolis, plus the RD83 between Colmar and Sélestat and the RD1363, RD502 and RD504.

Every vehicle with a technically permissible laden mass above 3.5 t that is built or used for goods transport is liable, unless it holds an exemption. Foreign-registered trucks have the same duties as French ones and must register in R-PASS before they use a taxed road. Drivers can pay with a per-trip e-ticket or with an on-board unit from an EETS provider, and our guide to the European Electronic Toll Service for HGVs explains how that contract works. Frequently asked questions

Is the R-Pass start date of 2027-01-01 certain?

No. It is the date set by the CEA and repeated by the operator, but a haulier appeal filed on 2025-12-22 had no reported ruling on 2026-10-23. Check the operator site before the first January dispatch.

Do foreign trucks have to pay the R-Pass?

Yes. A vehicle registered outside France has the same rights and duties as a French one and must register in R-PASS before it enters a taxed road. It can then pay with an e-ticket or an EETS on-board unit.

Who gets the 13 percent R-Pass discount?

An HGV registered with an EETS provider that makes more than 20 trips a month on the taxed network. The cut applies only to the infrastructure part of the rate, not to the pollution and CO2 parts.

Are any trucks exempt from the R-Pass?

Some vehicles can claim an exemption on request, for example ambulances, military vehicles and certain vehicles of local craft businesses. The vehicle must still register with the operator.
