Truck costs 2027: is it the most expensive year yet to run a truck in Europe?

Truck costs 2027 rise on 2027-01-01 on every fixed line: wages, tolls, end of Germany's diesel tax cut. Diesel decides the total.

Truck costs 2027 rise on 2027-01-01 for every fixed line: driver wages, the Dutch toll, two new tolls in Lithuania and Alsace, and the end of Germany's 14.04 ct per litre diesel tax cut and of EU METSAF fuel aid. Whether 2027 becomes the most expensive year yet then depends on diesel, and crude is forecast lower: the EIA's October 2026 outlook puts Brent at 84 USD per barrel in 2027 against 96 USD in 2026. As of 2026-11-07 no cost index for 2027 exists, so this post builds the bill line by line from primary sources and marks which lines rise, which stay flat and which are still undecided.

Which truck costs go up on 1 January 2027?

Most of the confirmed increases are fixed costs, and several of them are set by law or by a published tariff. The table below covers a 40 t Euro VI tractor-trailer and separates what is decided from what is only announced. The lines that do not rise are included on purpose, because a bill that lists only increases would not be a fair bill.

The percentage changes marked in the table are our own arithmetic on the published figures. The Dutch figure of about 15.6 ct/km under the 22.3% discount is also our own calculation. Not in the table because nobody has set them: the pump price of diesel, insurance, AdBlue, Belgian wage indexation, Dutch collective pay and the Polish e-TOLL rate for 2027.

Why are trucking costs rising in 2027?

Trucking costs rise in 2027 mainly because labour and road charges follow calendars, not oil prices. A wage floor or a toll tariff changes on a fixed date, and a haulier cannot hedge it. Diesel moves with the market and with tax decisions, which is why it decides the final result.

The starting point matters. IRU, Upply and Transport Intelligence reported on 2026-08-11 that European road freight operating costs rose almost 10% year on year in Q2 2026. EU diesel averaged 1.94 EUR per litre in that quarter, up 27% on the year, with a peak of 2.19 EUR in April 2026. The European Commission's METSAF fuel-cost state aid framework also runs only until 2026-12-31, with no extension announced. That makes 2026 a high bar, and it is the reason a 2027 forecast of lower crude does not automatically mean a cheaper year.

How much more will tolls cost in 2027?

Tolls rise in some countries and stay put in others, so the answer depends on the lanes you run. The Netherlands is the clearest case. RDW announced on 2026-08-20 a 2027 rate of 20.6 ct/km for a Euro VI diesel truck over 32 t. The 2026 discount of 22.3% runs from 2026-09-01 to 2026-12-31, so against the discounted rate the step is about 32%, while against the full rate it is only about 2.6% indexation.

Two new distance tolls start on 2027-01-01. Lithuania replaces its time-based vignette with Via Toll, and Alsace introduces the R-Pass on the A35 and A36, with an appeal by the French carrier federation FNTR still pending. Via Lietuva published the Via Toll rates on 2026-06-30 , with Euro VI trucks of up to 3 axles averaging 11.1 ct/km, and the R-Pass tariff runs from 7.4 to 14.6 ct/km for Euro VI vehicles by weight class. See every 2027 toll change by country for the rates and registration steps.

Belgium is mixed. The Viapass notice from October 2026 says Wallonia indexes on the August 2026 CPI, Flanders may index and Brussels plans no indexation. Zero-emission trucks in Flanders and Brussels also lose part of their relief, as the infrastructure charge discount drops from 80% to 60%. On the other side, no 2027 change is announced for the German toll as of 2026-11-07, and the Swiss LSVA rise from 2027 was rejected in committee 8 to 3 on 2026-05-22 before the Council of States treated it as rejected in June 2026.

How much will driver wages add to truck costs in 2027?

For a German-employed driver at the wage floor, the increase is about 121 EUR per month. The German MiLoV5 regulation sets the floor at 14.60 EUR per hour for 2027, up from 13.90 EUR, which is 5.0%. Over 173.33 hours per month that moves the monthly floor from 2,409 EUR to 2,531 EUR.

The German floor also reaches foreign carriers. Cabotage, meaning domestic transport inside a country by a carrier established elsewhere, and cross-trade days in Germany count as posted work, so the German minimum applies for those days. Pure bilateral and transit runs are not posting under Directive (EU) 2020/1057. Check your posting days in Germany before the new year and adjust the payroll tool.

Other countries move as well, at different speeds. Poland raises its minimum wage from 4,806 PLN to 4,950 PLN per month from 2027-01-01 , a rise of 3.0%, under the regulation of 2026-09-14. Compare the 2027 truck driver minimum wage by country for Germany, Poland, Czechia and Lithuania. The Dutch collective agreement for goods transport expires on 2026-12-31 and its successor is not agreed, so that wage line stays open.

Will diesel cost more or less in 2027?

Does Germany's CO2 price make diesel dearer in 2027?

No, not through the CO2 charge itself, because the German corridor is flat. The Bundestag passed the Third Act amending the BEHG on 2026-10-15, with a corridor of 55 to 65 EUR per tonne for both 2026 and 2027. At 65 EUR per tonne the charge is about 17.4 ct per litre of fossil diesel before VAT, our own calculation from 2.676 kg CO2 per litre. The Bundesrat step is still pending.

The 2027 change in German diesel taxation comes from elsewhere. The 14.04 ct per litre energy-tax cut applies from 2026-10-01 to 2026-12-31, and no extension had been found on 2026-11-07. The federal government said on 2026-10-01 that it would talk to the oil industry about a fuel price cap modelled on Luxembourg or Belgium by 2027-01-01 at the latest, and nothing is set. If the cut lapses and no cap arrives, German diesel is 14.04 ct per litre dearer before VAT from January, other things equal. Check what the German CO2 price adds to diesel in 2027 for the per-litre calculation.

ETS2, the EU carbon market for road fuels, adds no carbon cost to diesel in 2027. The European Commission says ETS2 becomes fully operational in 2028 , after the one-year postponement agreed in December 2025. Read when ETS2 starts for road transport to plan the 2028 budget.

What do the crude oil forecasts say for 2027?

Crude is forecast lower, but nobody has published a 2027 pump-price forecast, so the honest answer is: probably, if the forecasts hold. The EIA released its October outlook on 2026-10-06 with Brent at 96 USD per barrel in 2026 and 84 USD in 2027. The World Bank Commodity Markets Outlook of 2026-10-28 puts the average at about 91 USD in 2026 and about 79 USD in 2027.

The World Bank also published an adverse scenario with Brent at 105 USD in 2027. That case is higher than the 2026 average, and it is the case in which 2027 is most likely to beat 2026 as the costlier year. A forecast is not a price, and the pump price adds taxes, margins and the German tax decision on top of crude.

Two dates matter in the next weeks. The next EIA update arrives on 2026-11-10, and the German tax cut lapses on 2026-12-31 unless the government extends it. Compare live diesel prices by country , and read the diesel price forecast for 2027 for the scenarios.

Is 2027 really the most expensive year yet to run a truck in Europe?

The sources do not support a yes or a no today, so the answer is conditional. The fixed lines rise: wages, the Dutch toll, two new tolls and the end of two fuel supports. Crude is forecast to fall by 12.5% in the EIA case, but no source converts that into a pump price or into a share of your bill.

The mix of your own cost matters. A haulier with a high toll share, for example one running through the Netherlands, Belgium and Lithuania, feels the fixed lines more. A haulier mostly on German motorways pays no new toll and may feel the end of the diesel tax cut more.

The fixed lines rise whatever happens, and diesel is the swing line. The World Bank adverse case of 105 USD Brent in 2027 is the scenario where the record-year claim is most likely to hold. Until the 2027 indices are published, treat any claim of a record year, including this post's headline, as a hypothesis to test against your own cost per kilometre.

What can hauliers do about higher costs in 2027?

Reprice the contracts and rebuild the budget before 2027-01-01, because most of the changes land on that date. The steps below follow the order in which the deadlines fall.

  • Reprice contracts with fuel and toll clauses, so that a diesel move in either direction passes through to the customer. Quote the toll as a separate line.
  • Update the cost-per-km budget with the new wage floor and toll rates. Build your 2027 cost-per-km budget with the template.
  • Check posting days in Germany for the cabotage and cross-trade runs, and apply the 14.60 EUR per hour floor from the first day of January.
  • Check the Belgian and Dutch toll rates on 2027-01-01 against the Viapass and RDW notices, since Flanders is not yet confirmed.
  • Check the Via Toll and R-Pass registration rules on the operators' sites before the first 2027 trip into Lithuania or Alsace.
  • Watch the EIA update on 2026-11-10 and any German decision on the tax cut, and rerun the budget when either lands.

Keep two diesel cases in the budget. One uses the forecast fall and the other uses the World Bank adverse case of 105 USD Brent. A contract that holds in both cases carries less diesel risk.

Frequently asked questions

Will truck costs be higher in 2027 than in 2026?

The fixed lines will be higher and the diesel line is forecast lower. The EIA and the World Bank expect Brent to average 84 USD and about 79 USD in 2027, against 96 USD and about 91 USD in 2026. So the fixed lines rise while the direction of the diesel line is open.

Is there a cost index for 2027 yet?

No. As of 2026-11-07 no 2027 outlook from the French CNR, Panteia, BGL or Upply has been published. Use the line-by-line bill above and refresh it when an index appears.

Which countries add new tolls in 2027?

Lithuania starts a distance-based toll, Via Toll, and Alsace starts the R-Pass on 2027-01-01. The Netherlands raises its rate to 20.6 ct/km for Euro VI trucks over 32 t, and Wallonia indexes on CPI. See the full list of 2027 toll changes for the rates.

Does the German CO2 price go up in 2027?

No. The corridor of 55 to 65 EUR per tonne is the same in 2026 and 2027, according to the act passed by the Bundestag on 2026-10-15. The Bundesrat step is still pending.

What happens to German diesel tax on 2027-01-01?

The 14.04 ct per litre cut ends on 2026-12-31 unless it is extended. No extension had been found on 2026-11-07, so budget for the full tax from January.

How much does the German driver minimum wage rise in 2027?

It rises from 13.90 EUR to 14.60 EUR per hour, which is 5.0%. At the floor that is about 121 EUR more per driver per month. See the German minimum wage for truck drivers in 2027 for foreign-driver rules.
